How to Make Cinnamon Bun Frosting Without Cream Cheese
You cannot have a fluffy cinnamon roll without its trusty companion, the icing! This icing recipe is perfection—the best texture and just the right amount of sweetness.
Cream cheese icing is a necessity on freshly baked cinnamon rolls, but you could even use it on donut muffins, a sweet breakfast casserole, or banana bars! It's very versatile.
Best frosting for cinnamon rolls
To eat a cinnamon roll without a thick layer of icing on top should be illegal. Icing completes the cinnamon roll and makes it finger-lickin' good.
I love to smooth on the icing on top of my fresh-out-of-the-oven cinnamon rolls. Making sure it seeps into every nook and cranny is the best part! No part of the cinnamon roll should go untouched by icing (just my personal opinion but I think you'll agree with me.)
This recipe is the easiest icing recipe ever. Just 4 ingredients and a few minutes will turn into icing heaven! A little butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and milk (or half n half) are all you need.

How to make it? Begin by gathering together your ingredients. Make sure the butter and cream cheese are both softened, not melted and not still cold from the fridge. I like to leave mine out on the counter for at least 45 minutes before making the icing.
Grab a medium sized bowl and mix all the ingredients together. You can do this by hand or with a mixer. Beat until the icing is nice and smooth. Once it's ready, spread it all over warm cinnamon rolls.
Storing the icing is easy. If you need to make it ahead of time, you can keep it covered in the fridge for a couple of days until you need to use it.
Let it sit on the counter for a couple minutes before spreading over your cinnamon rolls. You can even thin the icing with a little bit of milk or half n half.
Use it on any of our favorite cinnamon roll recipes:

Want to change up the flavor a bit? Add a little cinnamon to the icing for an extra pop of spice!
If you want to make these during the fall season you could even add a little pumpkin pie spice to it. It adds the cinnamon but also the flavors of fall we love so much.
If you prefer a frosting without cream cheese, feel free to leave it out! Just add in more butter and a little vanilla extract. Mix until you get the right consistency before spreading. 😉
We can practically guarantee that this frosting will be a hit with anyone who tries it. It's just that good!
